Viviana Duran selected as spring banner bearer for May 2025

What is your major?

  • Human Sciences/Human Resource Development

What is your hometown?

  • Lubbock, TX

Why did you choose your major?

  • When I first started college, I thought I wanted to go into nursing because I knew I wanted to help people. But after some time in that path, I realized that healthcare just wasn’t the right fit for me. What I appreciated about Human Sciences was how flexible the degree was; it gave me room to figure things out without starting over completely. I was able to shift my concentrations toward the business side of things, which ended up being a much better fit for my interests and strengths. Once I found that direction, I added a second degree in Human Resource Development. It only added one extra semester, and it really complemented what I was already studying. Both programs gave me the tools to keep helping people, just in a different way than I originally imagined.

What does it feel like to be selected as the Banner Bearer for the College of Health & Human Sciences?

  • It’s such an amazing honor, and honestly, a little surreal! I’ve worked really hard during my time here, but I never expected to be recognized in such a big way. Being chosen as the Banner Bearer feels like the perfect way to wrap up my college journey—it's a celebration of everything I've learned and the growth I've gone through. It’s also really meaningful to be able to represent the College of Health & Human Sciences, especially because this college has played such a huge role in helping me find my path and shape my goals.

What do you enjoy most or appreciate about the College of Health & Human Sciences?

  • The people, for sure. The professors and advisors really care and want you to succeed, and the students are so supportive too. It’s a welcoming place where I felt like I could explore different interests and still stay on track. That kind of support really helped me grow into who I am today. I’ve learned so much; not just academically, but about myself and what I want to do moving forward.

What are your career plans/next steps?

  • After graduation, I plan to pursue a career in human resources or organizational development. I’m really passionate about helping people reach their potential and creating positive, inclusive work environments. I want to be someone who helps build strong teams and supports employee well-being and development. Eventually, I’d love to step into a leadership role where I can shape workplace culture and make a real impact on how people experience their jobs. I’m excited to keep learning and growing as I take the next steps in my career!
