At some point, retired teacher Jan King realized she was missing being in the classroom. Having been in education for 34 years, she found a way to get back to it, albeit remotely, by pursuing an elementary teaching position with TTU K-12. She joined the staff last fall.
"I missed being involved in education. I love children and I love teaching children! I believe all children are special," King said. "I love the relationship established between the teacher and the student. I love seeing 'the light' come on when they 'get it.' I love to see that moment when it all clicks, like sounding out words and they begin to read or when they get the connections in math. It's so rewarding!"
King teaches K-3 English language arts and reading (ELAR), math, social studies and science for Texas Tech University Elementary School. Previously she has taught grades 6-8 ELAR, science and social studies, grades 3-5 Gifted and Talented, as well as junior high English.
Believing each child has unique gifts and strengths, King says she enjoys being a part of helping children find those gifts and strengths and wants to be an encourager to all children to be their very best.
Moving from decades in a traditional classroom to online teaching did make her somewhat apprehensive starting out with TTU K-12.

"I had concerns that I wouldn't get to know them," King admitted. "But I was wrong! I feel like I have a sense of their unique personalities, through videos and pictures of them working on their projects. I have enjoyed communicating with parents, as well. We also have Collaborate, where teachers and students have the opportunity to visit."
King also offers very clear advice to her students and families.
"Do your best. Find what you love and run with it!" she encourages. "Know that your teachers are there for you always, to help in any way."
King earned her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Baylor University and a Master of Education from Eastern New Mexico University. Aside from teaching, she enjoys traveling, reading spending time with her family and playing with her Yorkie, Gracie.
