Adviser's Lifelong Love of Caring for Kids Shines Through Her Students.

Taylor Fierro has always worked with kids. Since her grandmother was a first-grade teacher, the environment was an everyday part of her childhood. Now she cares for TTU K-12 “kids” as a senior academic adviser, helping them be successful along their educational paths.

“When I was younger, I was always the one offering to babysit for neighbors, family and friends,” Fierro said. “Once I got through grade school, I pursued psychology and elementary education because I genuinely thought I was meant to be in a classroom.”

After years of in-field experience and working as a childcare director, Fierro said she knew the traditional setting was just not for her. She loved the hands-on approach but wanted something more “outside the box.”

“As I continued with childcare, I found I was able to have just that while incorporating counseling into my work,” she said. “Since 2016, I have continued my work of childcare, summer camps, and now academic advising. I love being able to make an impact on my students' education and their lives as best as I can.”

Fierro arrived in West Texas after her husband's work transferred them from Indiana to continue his career in the Permian Basin; she had her eyes (and heart) set on working for Texas Tech.

She knew she wanted that experience in higher education, since she had been with elementary school for so long. When Fierro found the opportunity to work as an adviser, she was excited to be able to continue working within what she was used to but also having the challenge to expand her experience.

Although it was a huge change going from seeing her students every day to only working with them virtually, the program was unique and offered so many opportunities to families that needed them, she says it was worth it.

“In an ever-evolving and technologically growing world, I wanted to be a part of that change,” she said emphatically.

To Fierro, one of the most satisfying parts of her job is seeing students reach graduation and getting to watch so many of the seniors walk the stage to receive their diplomas.

“I also enjoy witnessing students who transfer to our programs and find success and comfort within their education, as well as providing support for families that need the alternative form of traditional school while still receiving quality education,” she added.

Much like her optimism for her students' success, Fierro also has expectations for the program.

“My hope for TTU K-12 is that we continue to expand our horizons and offerings, make an impact on the families and students that need the flexibility our programs offer, continue improving to fit the needs of our students, and making the difference in the lives of those who need it most!”

Fierro's best advice for her students, and anyone else, comes from lessons learned in growing up and pursuing her own goals.

“Nothing good worth having in life comes easy,” she said. “Navigating through all things, you are going to be faced with an assortment of obstacles. By understanding this, you are preparing yourself with the fuel you need to problem-solve and challenge yourself to be better and go beyond that comfort zone. Be different, be you.”
