BASIS FOR DISTRIBUTION OF SPECIES

Each species account in this book includes a description of the distribution of the species in Texas, and most accounts include a map of the distribution in the state. Distributions are based on documented county records or other sources of data, including

1. specimens collected in Texas and held in various museums;
2. records in published scientific literature;
3. Texas Department of State Health Services records (bats);
4. Texas Parks and Wildlife Department distribution files, field biologists' reports, confirmed sightings and mortality records, and hunting season reports; and
5. records of the Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Response Program National Database (cetaceans).
