Get Involved with SGA

 

Students can participate in the Student Government Association in several ways, from first-year leadership programs and university committees to elected office and other SGA leadership opportunities.

You do not have to begin as an elected officer to get involved. Students can find opportunities that match their interests, experience level and available time.

First Year Involvement

SGA offers several opportunities specifically for students beginning their Texas Tech experience. These programs allow new students to learn how student government works, build leadership experience and represent student interests early in their university career.

First Year Council

First Year Council gives first-year students an opportunity to work closely with the Student Senate and gain experience with the legislative side of SGA.

Students interested in First Year Council participate in an election process during the fall semester.

• Intent to Run Form deadline: Sept. 12 at 11:59 p.m.
• Mandatory Election Workshop: Sept. 17
• Campaigning: Sept. 19-24

First Year Leadership Association

The First Year Leadership Association gives first-year students experience working alongside SGA executive officers and staff throughout the academic year.

The program includes 23 members and two advisors. Participants are paired with SGA mentors working in areas such as the Student Body President's office, vice presidential offices, Chief of Staff, communications and governmental relations.

Participation Requirements

• Applicants must be first-year Texas Tech students.
• Members complete two office hours each week during regular SGA office hours.
• Members attend biweekly Student Senate meetings.
• Membership is for the academic year.

• Application deadline: Sept. 5 at 11:59 p.m.
• Interviews: Sept. 10-12
• Final interview: Sept. 18

Serve on a University Committee

SGA appoints students to university committees that address topics including student fees, transportation, university facilities, student services and other areas affecting the student experience.

Committee service allows students to work directly with university faculty, staff and administrators while representing student perspectives in university decision-making. First-year students may also serve as student representatives on university committees.

Meeting schedules and time commitments vary by committee.

SGA Ambassadors

SGA Ambassadors represent the Student Government Association and Texas Tech through university activities, outreach and student engagement.

The program provides another way for students to participate in SGA without running for elected office. Ambassadors may assist with SGA initiatives, university programs and efforts to connect the Student Government Association with the broader student body.

Availability, eligibility requirements and selection timelines may vary by academic year. Students interested in the program should contact SGA for current information.

Run for Office

Students interested in elected leadership can run for Student Government Association positions through the annual SGA election process.

Elected positions include executive officers and representatives in the Student Senate. Senators represent academic colleges and other designated student constituencies.

The Election Commission oversees SGA elections and publishes the current election schedule, candidate information and voting information.
