Judicial Branch

The Judicial Branch of the Student Government Association is vested in the SGA Supreme Court. The Court interprets SGA governing law, reviews constitutional questions and hears appeals from the SGA Election Commission.

The Supreme Court consists of seven justices. Justices are appointed through the Executive Branch and confirmed by the Student Senate.

About the Supreme Court

The SGA Supreme Court is the judicial branch of student government and is responsible for interpreting the SGA Constitution and other applicable SGA governing law.

The Court provides an independent process for resolving questions involving SGA constitutional authority, the actions of SGA branches and appeals arising from the election process.

Supreme Court Responsibilities

• Interpret the SGA Constitution
• Review questions involving SGA constitutional authority
• Hear appeals from the SGA Election Commission
• Review petitions submitted by students
• Issue decisions that are final and binding through the applicable SGA process

Current Justices

What the Court Reviews

Students may ask the Supreme Court to review a matter when they believe an action involving SGA conflicts with the SGA Constitution or applicable SGA governing law.

Examples may include:

• Questions about the interpretation of the SGA Constitution
• Concerns that SGA legislation conflicts with the Constitution
• Questions about the authority of an SGA branch or officer
• Appeals from decisions made through the SGA election process

The Supreme Court is limited to matters within SGA jurisdiction. It does not replace university conduct, academic, Title IX or other university appeal processes.

Submit a Petition

Any Texas Tech student may submit a petition asking the SGA Supreme Court to review a matter within its jurisdiction.

A petition should clearly explain the issue being raised, identify the SGA action or decision being challenged and provide enough information for the Court to understand the basis of the request.

Before Submitting a Petition

• Identify the specific SGA issue or decision being challenged.
• Explain how the issue relates to the SGA Constitution or other governing authority.
• Include relevant facts, dates and supporting information.
• Contact SGA if you are unsure whether the matter falls within Supreme Court jurisdiction.

Court Decisions

The Supreme Court may issue written decisions when resolving constitutional questions, election appeals or other matters properly brought before the Court.

Current or significant Court decisions may be made available by SGA when they are relevant to students or future interpretation of SGA governing law. Historical working documents and internal Court records do not need to be maintained as separate public web pages.
