Berto Garcia, who will start his second year in the department of electrical and computer engineering, created the system in high school for a science fair project. He now has a provisional patent. He's 19.

Woodpeckers. Long-horned rams. American football players.

They all have one major thing in common: frequent, repeated blows to the head.

Humans, however, seem to have a weakness not shared by the animals: they are more likely to suffer brain injuries from these impacts.

Students and faculty meet with Texas Instruments vice president.

Mark Gary, a Texas Tech and electrical and computer engineering graduate from 1988 was recently named vice president, DC Solutions, at Texas Instruments. He met with ECE students and faculty to discuss Texas Instrument's 21st century workforce needs and to develop strategies for Texas Instruments and Texas Tech to partner in curriculum enrichment. Texas Instruments has a long history of support for electrical and computer engineering at Texas Tech and Mark described his vision for expanding our work together going forward. He was hosted by professor and Keh-Shew Lu Regents Chair Donald Lie, and professors Stephen Bayne, Tim Dallas and Richard Gale. During his visit in the week leading up the College of Engineering Career Fair, Mr Gary also met with Dean Al Sacco Jr.

Recent Student Awards and Recognition

Shelby Lacouture Awarded the 2016 Arthur H. Guenther Pulsed Power Student Award

The Pulsed Power Science and Technology Committee's Outstanding Pulsed Power Student Award (established in 1997) was renamed the Arthur H. Guenther Pulsed Power Student Award in 2007 following the passing of Dr. Guenther. The Award is to recognize outstanding contributions as a student in pulsed power engineering, science or technology. A recipient is selected each year but awarded biennially at the Pulsed Power Conference Banquet. This award is $1,000 and Certificate. Funded by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society's International Pulsed Power Conference budget. Awarded annually, with presentation at the biennial IEEE International Pulsed Power Conference Awards Banquet.

Anupom Taslim, a senior ECE student, will be presenting at the American Society of Gravitational and Space Research Annual Meeting, on work done with Professor Siva Vanipalli of Chemical Engineering.

Students from ECE in various student organizations including HKN, IEEE, and the RoboRaiders hosted more than 500 middle school and high school participants in BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) Robotics at the Fall 2016 Kickoff and Trial Run. Kickoff was held at Frenship High School and Trial Run at Monterey High School. The theme of the game this year is 'Bet the Farm', details at http://www.depts.ttu.edu/coe/stem/best/index.php
