Texas Tech University

Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives

HSI Staff and Students

Since the fall of 2019, Texas Tech University has been designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI). This federal designation enables Texas Tech to apply for grant funding to better resource, access, retain, and graduate Hispanic students. While this designation is centered on minoritized, rural, low-income, and Pell-eligible students, the funding from these grants creates broader resources benefiting all students. To achieve this status, Campus Access & Engagement and other campus partners gathered data to become a Title III- and Title V-eligible institution and show Hispanic, full-time enrolled, undergraduate enrollment was at 25% beginning in the fall of 2017. The Texas Tech community is proud of its HSI designation and works to continue ensuring access and opportunity to all students through the benefits of this designation.

Our Mission

Our mission is to utilize federal grants and our Hispanic Serving Institution designation to increase student access, retention and graduation rates.

Our Vision

Our vision is to empower every member of our campus community to achieve their fullest potential, through enhanced access to resources, support for academic and personal growth, and a strong connection with the Lubbock community. We aim to be a leader in providing an environment where every student is equipped for success and prepared to make a positive impact on the world around them.

Programs & Initiatives

Hispanic-Serving Instutition Week

This week includes events and discussions to foster and promote conversations about the benefits of being a Hispanic-Serving Institution. All events and programs during the weeklong celebration are open to the Texas Tech and Lubbock communities.

Hispanic-Serving Institutions 101 Professional Development

This 30 minute to 1-hour professional development experience is designed to educate attendees on the basics of being a federally designated HSI. Attendees walk away with a better understanding of the HSI designation, how it positively influences TTU’s campus, and how emerging research and best practices can help shape their role in advancing intentional service to all our students.

Pursuing the Seal of Excelencia

In partnership with Excelencia in Education, Texas Tech has engaged in thoughtful conversations and workshops that aim to make TTU a thriving HSI. It is our intention to continue our pursuit of the Seal of Excelencia through intentional data disaggregation, practice, and leadership.

HSI Essay Contest

Texas Tech undergraduates, share your experiences on our HSI campus! Submit a 750-1,000-word, double-spaced essay on what the HSI designation means to you and your vision for a truly Hispanic-serving campus.

Prompts to Consider:

  1. What challenges do you face as a student that can help inform our HSI services?
  2. How would you encourage our campus faculty, staff, and administrators to be Hispanic-Serving?
  3. In what ways do you see TTU serving its underserved populations, and in what ways could we improve?
  4. If you self-identify as a Hispanic/Latino student, how has TTU, as a Hispanic Serving Institution, supported your college experience?
  5. If you identify as a first-generation student, how has TTU, as a Hispanic-Serving Institution, helped you overcome any challenges? What can TTU do to continue supporting first-generation students? Submissions can be in English, Spanglish, or Spanish.
