CASNR congressional internship program seeks applicants
Texas Tech's College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources on Friday extended a deadline to apply for their fall semester congressional internship program. Officials had originally set a deadline of Jan. 30 but extended it to March 9.
"Students participating in this program have uniformly benefited from their hands-on congressional experience," said CASNR's Associate Dean for Academic and Student Programs Norman Hopper.
Lifetime Experience. Among the primary benefits are first-hand experience in government, as well as political, industry and alumni networking opportunities. Moreover, he said, there are numerous regional outlets that include iconic historical sites and several of the nation's leading museums.
"My congressional internship was truly a once in a lifetime experience," said Jenna Jones, a senior agricultural communications major from Slaton who interned with U.S. Senator Tom Harkin [D-IA] last year. "It was a wonderful opportunity, and I feel very blessed to be able to take part in such an outstanding program."
Eligibility Requirements. More than 60 students have served as interns since the establishment of the program in 1998. To be eligible for an internship, students must have completed 30 hours of course work and have a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.75 at the time of the interview and internship.
A number of donors have been instrumental in making the internship program possible, including the Texas Corn Producers Board and Texas Peanut Producers Board, which originally established the program. Others that have joined in supporting the program are Plains Cotton Growers, Texas Wheat Producers, Dan Taylor, Texas Farm Bureau, and South Texas Cotton and Grain.
Beltway Bound. Today, four CASNR students are working in Washington congressional offices this semester. Sophomore Victoria Gartman of Austin is working for U.S. Representative Kay Granger (R-TX 12th), while junior Kendra Pond of Wolfforth is in the office of U.S. Representative Michael Burgess (R-TX 26th).
Junior Stephen Sheppard of Grapevine is working for U.S. Representative Mike Conaway (R-TX 11th). Senior Brody Berry of Texhoma, Okla., is serving with the House Committee on Agriculture, which oversees legislation involving agriculture, forestry, nutrition, rural development, rural electrification and watersheds, and school nutrition.
