Texas Tech riders win Sul Ross State University Rodeo
Texas Tech University men's rodeo team dominated 15 other teams from the southwest region of the National Collegiate Rodeo Association Sept. 24-26, taking first place at the Sul Ross State University Rodeo in Alpine.
Following the Red Raiders in the 'Top 5' were Weatherford College, Tarleton State University, Vernon College and Howard County Junior College. Tech's women's rodeo team placed fourth out of 16 teams behind Western Texas College, South Plains College and Tarleton State University, respectively.
"This is an extremely tough region but we have some awesome competitors on both the men's and women's teams this year," said Coach Chris Guay. "I expect even more success as the season progresses for every member of the team in his or her respective events. I know we will be represented well at the College National Finals Rodeo next June."
Of the six standard men's events, the men from Texas Tech won two, placed second in
two, and took home fourth in another. Winners included:
"C.J. Kerr, a freshman animal and food sciences major from Paradise, tied for first in the finals
and first overall in steer wrestling.
"Adam Sawyer, a junior agricultural economics major from Bassett, Neb., tied for second place
in go round one and finished seventh overall in steer wrestling.
"Luke Creasy, a junior journalism major from Alberta, Canada, tied for first in the finals and
won first overall in bareback bronc riding.
"Jay Manning, a senior animal and food sciences major from Ingram, and Jeremy Buhler, an agricultural leadership major from Levelland, placed first in the finals and
second overall in team roping.
"Bonner Bolton, a senior art major from Gardendale, placed second in the bull riding finals and
second overall.
"Logan Allen, a senior agricultural leadership major from Crescent, Iowa, placed third in go round
one and was fourth overall in the saddle bronc riding event.
Meanwhile for the second consecutive week, the Lady Raiders turned in a number of
strong performances. Taylor Langdon, a freshman animal and food sciences major from Aubrey, finished third in the finals
and fourth overall in barrel racing.
Kallie Lamb, a junior animal and food sciences major from Alberta, Canada, placed third in the first go round, fifth in the finals, and third overall in goat tying. The Red Raiders and Lady Raiders compete next in Perryton, where Frank Phillips College and Western Texas A&M University co-host the region's 16 rodeo teams, Oct. 1-3.
