Governor appoints Brashears to Brazos River Authority Board
A Texas Tech University associate professor has been appointed to the Brazos River Authority Board of Directors, according to an announcement from Gov. Rick Perry's office. The authority is responsible for developing and conserving the surface water resources of the Brazos River Basin.
Todd Brashears with Tech's Department of Agricultural Education and Communications will serve a term to expire Feb. 1, 2015.
Brashears is vice president of the Southern Region of the American Association of Agricultural Education, and a member of the National American Association for Agricultural Education, International Association of Food Protection, North American College Teachers of Agriculture and Association of Leadership Educators.
He received a bachelor's degree from Texas Tech and master's degree in agricultural education from Oklahoma State University. His doctorate in agricultural education is from Texas Tech.
The Brazos River Authority, with headquarters in Waco, is the oldest river authority in Texas. Created by the Texas Legislature in 1929, the organization's 42,000 square-mile territory includes all or part of 70 counties; extending from the Texas-New Mexico border west of Lubbock to the Gulf of Mexico near Freeport.
The authority built, owns and operates three reservoirs: Lakes Possum Kingdom, Granbury, and Limestone. In addition to these water supply reservoirs, it contracts with the Corps of Engineers for the water supply storage space at eight federal multi-purpose flood control and water conservation reservoirs.
Today, the organization's staff of some 250 develop and distribute water supplies, provide water and wastewater treatment, monitor water quality, and pursue water conservation through public education programs. Although the Brazos River Authority is an agency of the State of Texas, it doesn't levy or collect taxes.
