Noted NM landscape architect joins Texas Tech faculty
A deeply experienced New Mexico landscape architect has been named an assistant professor in Texas Tech University's Department of Landscape Architecture. Patricia Westbrook, a native of Wichita Falls and a New Mexico transplant, began her teaching and design duties on Jan. 11.
"Pat brings to Texas Tech an outstanding record as a landscape architect in both the public and private sectors," said Department Chairman Alon Kvashny. "She'll continue building our reputation for academic excellence."
Public Practice. Westbrook worked for the City of Albuquerque for 16 years, initially as the manager of the parks and recreation capital implementation program, then as project manager for the Albuquerque Aquarium and Rio Grande Botanic Garden.
"Being part of bringing the aquarium and botanic garden to the citizens of Albuquerque was a once in a career opportunity," Westbrook said. "They have become a key element of Albuquerque's community identity."
Academic Service. She received her bachelor's degree in landscape architecture from Texas Tech and master's degree in landscape architecture from the University of New Mexico. Westbrook is a registered landscape architect in Texas, New Mexico and Arizona.
Prior to joining the Texas Tech faculty, Westbrook served on the landscape architecture faculty of the University of New Mexico's School of Architecture and Planning and Albuquerque's Central New Mexico Community College.
Urban Design. In addition, she is the owner of Terra Creatas Landscape Architecture, an urban design and planning firm, and was part of the design team for the Tingley Park reconstruction for the City of Albuquerque, which was ultimately winner of a Southwest Contractor Magazine's Best of 2008 Award.
Awards for Westbrook include Texas Tech Distinguished Alumnus Award (2003), American Zoo and Aquarium Association Board of Directors Resolution of Appreciation (1997), and Advocates of Therapeutic Recreation Services Community Achievement Award (1993).
She is past chapter president of the New Mexico Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects, as well as a member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Lambda Alpha and Council of Educators in Landscape Architecture.
