Texas Tech meat judging team extends winning streak
Texas Tech's potent meat judging team continued its winning ways Sunday (Feb. 7), breezing past nine other universities to take first place honors at the Southwestern Livestock Show's Meat Judging Contest in Fort Worth. The victory was the second major win for the Red Raiders during the 2010 season.
"This was another exciting win," said Mark Miller, a Texas Tech professor and San Antonio Livestock Show Distinguished Chair in Meat Science. "I couldn't be more proud of these students and the progress they have made so far."
Tech took the top spot by a 60-point margin, posting a score of 4,091 points. They finished first in the beef grading, lamb judging, overall beef, pork judging, specifications and reasons divisions. The competition's other top finishers were Kansas State University, Fresno State University, University of Nebraska and Oklahoma State University.
Four of the 'Top-10' individuals and four of the 'Top-10' alternates were from Texas Tech. Trevor White, a sophomore from New Home, took first, while Loni Woolley, a sophomore from Grandview, ranked second. Markus Miller, a sophomore from Abernathy, was the ninth place individual, and tenth was KatieRose McCullough, a sophomore from Castle Rock, Colo.
In the alternate division, Nathan Reeves, a sophomore from League City, Troy Tarpley, a sophomore from Fort Stockton, Mai Lee Holmes, a sophomore from Katy and Ethan Schlegel, a sophomore from Tribune, Kan., finished third, fifth, sixth and seventh overall, respectively.
