Meat judging team's perfect spring ends with Houston win
For the sixth consecutive year, Texas Tech's meat judging team garnered first place honors at the Houston Livestock Show's Meat Judging Contest. Sunday's (Mar. 7) contest was the third win of spring for the nine-member team.
"This is an exceptionally competitive group of individuals," said Mark Miller, the meat judging team coach and Tech's San Antonio Livestock Show Distinguished Chair in Meat Science. "I'm excited their hard work has paid off."
The Red Raiders posted a score of 4,185 "" 91 points ahead of their nearest competitor. They won beef grading, beef judging, lamb judging, overall beef, total placing and reasons divisions. Other top finishers were Colorado State University, Kansas State University, Oklahoma State University and Fresno State University.
Four of the 'Top-10' individuals in Houston were from Texas Tech. Loni Woolley, a sophomore from Grandview, won the contest by 21 points. Trevor White, a sophomore from New Home, ranked third and Markus Miller, a sophomore from Abernathy, won fourth place honors. KatieRose McCullough, a sophomore from Castle Rock, Colo., finished seventh overall.

The team is coached by Miller and meat science graduate student Travis O'Quinn.
According to officials, Tech's meat judging teams have won 14 of the past 15 national meat judging competitions. Houston marked the last contest of the spring for the 2010 team. The team is scheduled to compete in four contests during the fall.
