Capitol Idea: CASNR summer interns bound for Washington
Six students from Texas Tech's College of Agriculture and Natural Resources are looking forward to spending their summer working as interns in the nation's capitol. Running from the end of May through the first of August, the college's summer intern program affords selected students an opportunity to experience first-hand the government's day-to-day operations.
"Intern selections are always an exciting and difficult process," said Lori Dudley, the coordinator of student development in the college's Student Services Center. "From the initial large group interview through the final selection, we had an excellent pool of candidates this year."
This year's CASNR summer interns include:
"KatieRose McCullough, an animal sciences major: National Cattlemen's Beef Association
"Trevor White, an agriculture and applied economics major: Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Arkansas) on
the Senate Agriculture Committee
"Marie Hefley, an agriculture communications major: Congressmen Kevin Brady (R-Texas) and Congressman
Mac Thornberry (R-Texas)
"Jordan Shaw, a landscape architecture major: House Committee on Agriculture
"Jaryn Jones, an agriculture communications major: Congressman Randy Neugebauer (R-Texas)
"Adeline Fox, an agriculture communications major: Congressman Mike Conaway (R-Texas)
"I'm thrilled to be exposed to the political environment and to see firsthand the skills and knowledge that I'll need to excel," White said. "Over the next few years, I hope to work on developing the traits that will be useful in a potential future career in politics and public policy."
Fox added that she considered being selected for the internship a privilege. "I look forward to learning about the inner workings of Washington," she said. Meantime, Hefley looks forward to getting to see how her government works. "This is an amazing opportunity," she said. CASNR's interns will live at the Tech House, located just over a block from the Capitol Building.
