NRM's Micah-John Beierle Presented Graduate Student Excellence Award
A graduate student and staff member with Texas Tech's Department of Natural Resources Management has been recognized for academic excellence and involvement in fire-related research and service by the Association for Fire Ecology.
Micah-John Beierle received the 'Harold Weaver Graduate Student Excellence Award' on Thursday (Dec. 6) at the 5th International Fire Ecology and Management Congress in Portland. In addition, the New Berlin native presented a paper titled, "Shortgrass Prairie, Texas: A New Fire Season," at the meeting.
The Harold Weaver Graduate Student Excellence Award is named for Harold Weaver (1903""1983) who was a pioneer in the field of fire ecology, said Ernest Fish, a professor in Tech's Department of Natural Resources Management. Weaver is best known for his work on prescribed burning effects in forested and forest-grassland ecosystems. His work shaped the evolution of wilderness fire policy and fire use.
The nomination criteria for the graduate student excellence award included a 3.5 or better grade point average in graduate work, as well as:- A demonstrated contribution to the fire ecology field
- Involvement in fire ecology organization/activities
- Academic course work related to fire ecology
- Active member involved in local Student Association for Fire Ecology chapter activities.
