By: Norman Martin
Carlye Winfrey, a senior agricultural communications major from Texas Tech University's Department
of Agricultural Education & Communications, has been presented the Livestock Publications
Council's Forrest Bassford Award. The honor was presented this week at the 2023 Ag
Media Summit in Palm Springs, California.
The award recognizes and rewards excellence, leadership and encourages professionalism
among students. This opportunity provides the recipient face-to-face exchanges with
leaders in livestock publishing and the agricultural communications industry.
"This is a tremendous honor and brought our ACOM a lot of great exposure among industry at the conference," said Lindsay Kennedy, MILE program director and assistant professor of practice in agricultural communications.
As the award winner, the Seminole, Texas native received a $2,000 scholarship and a travel stipend to Ag Media Summit. Winfrey was the editor of the 2023 issue of The Agriculturist, a 2023 graduate of the Texas Tech MILE Program's third cohort and interned at the U.S. Department of State this summer. This fall, she will remain in Washington, D.C. as an intern for the U.S. House Agriculture Committee.
Tech's Department of Agricultural Education & Communications has 15 faculty members with more than 300 undergraduate students and 100 graduate students. Faculty members specialize in one of three disciplinary areas: teacher education, agricultural communications, and agricultural leadership. Master's degrees are available in agricultural education and agricultural communications, and a departmental Ph.D. program allows students to focus on any of the three areas. In addition, graduate certificates are available in agricultural leadership and agricultural communication.
