Research Spotlight: Dept. of Animal & Food Sciences’ Angela Shaw

Angela Shaw, an experienced food microbiologist, stepped into her research and teaching post with Tech's Department of Animal & Food Science in 2022. She has more than 17 years of managing a teaching, research and extension program. As a trained microbiologist, food scientist and meat scientist, her research program focuses on developing intervention strategies to control and prevent foodborne pathogens from entering the food supply. Her research focuses on fruits and vegetables, post-harvest handling, supply chain, grocers, and food manufacturing of FDA-regulated products.
Outside of research, she helps food companies navigate food safety regulations and provides food safety education workshops and courses. Honors include the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences Dean Lee R. Kolmer Award for Excellence in Applied Research; Iowa State University Extension and Outreach Excellence in Research-Based Programming Award; Iowa State University Award for Inclusive Excellence; and the 2020 Women Impacting Iowa State University Recipient. Her doctorate in animal science with an emphasis in food microbiology is from Texas Tech.
