AAEC’s Devadoss Tapped for Barnie Rushing Distinguished Research Award

Stephen Devadoss, the Emabeth Thompson Endowed Professor within Texas Tech University's Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics, has been selected as this year's recipient of the Texas Tech Parents Association's Barnie E. Rushing Jr. Distinguished Research Award. The honor was presented at the organization's Faculty & Student Awards Breakfast on Saturday (Apr. 6) at the International Cultural Center.
“I am honored to receive this important research award,” said Devadoss. “I value this recognition very highly which underscores the importance of research contribution to the college and the university.”
The award recognizes excellence in research, scholarship, and creative activity. Nominees are evaluated on the quality of scholarship, publications, and reference letters, according to Texas Tech's Office of Research & Innovation.Their research contributions should be of high quality and nationally recognized by peers in the field.
“The Barnie Rushing Award is a very prestigious award for research at Texas Tech and Dr. Devadoss is very deserving of this recognition,” said Darren Hudson, Davis College Associate Dean for Strategic Initiatives & Assessment and the Larry Combest Endowed Chair for Agricultural Competitiveness in the Department of Agricultural & Applied Economics.
“The award provides evidence of his research impact within the Texas Tech research community. Dr. Devadoss' research has been an important catalyst that has improved the stature of the Agricultural and Economics Department nationally since he came to Texas Tech,” he said.
“His graduate students consistently win outstanding research awards at the national and regional levels under his guidance, and he has regularly garnered significant research funding and is incredibly productive with research publications in top national and international journals.”
This also highlighted by Devadoss' long-time collaborator Washington State University's Jeff Luckstead, who noted, “Dr. Devadoss's dedication to research and publishing in reputable journals is apparent in his 16 research awards.”
Devadoss has a long history of academic success, including eight large NIFA grants worth about $4 million in recent years, which was highlighted in University of Illinois' William Ridley in his support letter, “Dr. Devadoss has also been extremely prolific throughout his career in securing external grant funding to support his research program. To this end, he has procured several million dollars in competitive funding, most of this as principal investigator.”
Devadoss is also well-known in his field, receiving the Southern Agricultural Economics Association Lifetime Achievement Award (2019), Fellow of Western Agricultural Economics Association (2010), Agricultural & Applied Economics Association (AAEA) Outstanding Graduate (2011) and Undergraduate (2012) Teacher Awards, and AAEA Graduate Mentoring Award (2022).
He was elected as the President of the Western Agricultural Economics Association, and his period covers three years (2021/22 to 2023/24). Devadoss has helped his graduate students to receive 17 outstanding thesis and dissertation awards from professional associations.
Devadoss received his bachelor's degree in agriculture from Tamil Nadu Agricultural University in Coimbatore, India, and his master's degree in agricultural economics from Indian Agricultural Research Institute in New Delhi, India. His doctorate in economics is from Iowa State University-Ames. He is a member of the American Agricultural Economics Association, Western Agricultural Economics Association, and Southern Agricultural Economics Association.
Current faculty members presented Barnie E. Rushing Jr. Distinguished Research Awards from Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources include Lam-Son Phan Tran (PSS) 2023; Kristin Hales (AFS) 2022; Chance Brooks (AFS) 2019; Jyotsna Sharma (PSS) 2017; and Darren Hudson (AAEC) 2013.
