Three students from Texas Tech’s Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources will spend the spring semester in Washington, D.C., gaining firsthand experience in the workings of the federal government.

The students – Wes Shaw of McLean, Texas, Klancy Bruton of Dimmitt, Texas and John Paul Klose of Canyon, Texas – were selected for the Davis College Congressional Internship Program, a competitive initiative that places undergraduates in the offices of members of Congress or on agriculture-related committees or agencies. The program runs through December and immerses participants in legislative operations, policy discussions and constituent services.

“Intern selections are always an exciting and difficult process,” said Haley Hudson, Davis College‘s program manager for academic and student programs. “This is one of the most unique opportunities available to our students.”

Shaw, a junior majoring in agricultural communications major, will intern with Rep. August Pfluger, a Republican of Texas’s 11th District; Klancy Bruton, a junior agricultural communications major, will serve in the U.S. Department of Agriculture White House Liaison’s Office; and Klose, a senior agricultural and applied economics/general business dual major, will join the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture.

During their stay in Washington, the students will live at the ‘Tech House,’ a residence located a block from the U.S. Capitol. Their living costs are partially offset by scholarships from donors supporting the program.
