Akbar Namin was invited to join LASA in July 2026 in recognition of his contributions in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and software engineering.

Namin, a professor in the Department of Computer Science at the Edward E. Whitacre Jr. College of Engineering (WCOE) has been selected as a foreign honorary member of the Luxembourg Academy of Sciences and Arts (LASA).

LASA is a non-profit, interdisciplinary scholarly academy that brings together professionals in science, technology, art, humanities and education.

Namin’s work emphasizes the development of trustworthy AI that weighs the long-term economic impact, both positive and negative, of this powerful tool.

Namin joined the Computer Science faculty at Texas Tech University in 2009 and his research endeavors have focused on AI and cybersecurity for the last 15 years.  In 2024, he was selected as a Fulbright Scholar and joined the Department of Computer Science and Security at St. Polten University of Applied Sciences in Austria as a visiting professor for the Spring semester 2025.

“AI is fundamentally transforming processes across multiple industries,” Namin explained.  “We are seeing an exponential acceleration of the pace of scientific discovery, which is exciting. AI tools can parse huge volumes of data with infinite patterns in ways that are not possible with human cognition limitations.”

Namin cautions that the benefits of AI must be balanced, under human decision-making, to ensure its responsible use as described by the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

“I look forward to the opportunities that participation in LASA will offer for our ongoing efforts to develop responsible avenues for AI use,” Namin added.
