Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant

A student whose parent or guardian was a member of the Armed Forces of the United States and died as a result of performing military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001 may be eligible for up to the maximum Federal Pell Grant each year regardless of financial need.

In addition, students who meet criteria for Pell Grant eligibility may also be eligible for increased funding from the Federal Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant program, Subsidized Direct Loan program, and Federal Work-Study program.

Beginning with the 2009-10 academic year, institutions will be notified by the Department of Defense of qualifying students who submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). All students meeting eligibility requirements are offered the Federal Pell Grant.

Eligibility:

  1. Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  2. Have a parent or guardian who was a member of the U.S. Armed Forces and died as a result of performing military service in Iraq or Afghanistan after September 11, 2001
  3. Have been less than 24 years of age or enrolled at an institution of higher education at the time of his or her parent or guardian's death

Award Range:

The maximum award is $6,195 for the 2019-20 award year.
