Since the 1990s, TTU K-12 has partnered with schools internationally for students to earn an American high school diploma, concurrent with the one they earn from their home countrys traditional school.
João Vitor de Andrade Lima has attended Bom Jesus in Brazil. He graduated in late November and is applying to universities here in the United States.
João says he enjoyed the high school program because it is shaped to teach students different points of view through a unique system of learning. Hoping to study political science in college, he admits that
U.S. History, government, and economics classes were most enjoyable.
“I think my biggest challenge was probably dealing with the intense workload,” João said. “In the Brazilian system we are not used to having as many home assignments, and thats something I struggled to adapt to at first.”
João has advice for students who are not sure about joining the program. He says he would highly recommend the TTU High School program for everyone who is thinking about taking it.
“It might seem tough at first, but it will pay off in the end once you get your concurrent diploma conferred upon graduation,” he said. “It also will prepare students to a similar level of assignments and dedication to whats expected in college.”
That, João says, will help ease the transition. And he believes the concurrent high School program will help him achieve his goals, although he is still deciding on his future objectives. He is applying to college in the United States and planning to major in political science. Later he may attend law school, but nothing is official. He was accepted to Texas Tech University, which is an option on his list.
“The TTU High School program has helped me in lots of ways, many of which were indirect,” he said. “Through high school, Ive had immense opportunities that helped me pave the way for my future. In turn, these opportunities are now allowing me to pursue my dream of going to college in the U.S.”
