Kelly Brownfield's decision to become an educator grew out of being a child raised in poverty. She saw firsthand the struggle her mother faced trying to raise two children with just a high school diploma.

Brownfield, the first college graduate in the family, is now an assistant principal for special services at TTU K-12. Not only does she work with students, but teachers and parents as well. She wants to ensure the needs of students are met and that they have an opportunity for success despite a qualifying condition.

“My education has created so many opportunities for me and for my children that I never thought possible,” she said. “I want to share that experience and message to others. I have been an educator for 31 years.”

The most satisfying thing about her job, she said, is seeing students succeed, gain confidence and accomplish their goals. Her hope for the future of TTU K-12 is continuing to grow and represent the university.

“The education I received at Texas Tech changed my life. I love this school and the unlimited potential it promises students who are willing to work hard and believe the impossible,” Brownfield said. “I saw the opportunity to work at TTU K-12 as the perfect way to join my love of students, education, and the university into one amazing journey.”

Brownfield says the most important thing for anyone to remember is to believe in yourself.

“We are often our own worst critics. The most important friendship you’ll ever have is with yourself! Encourage, support, and tell yourself good things!”
