As adults it is sometimes difficult to manage emotions, relationships and other important social concepts. Children have it even harder, not having the tools or understanding how to navigate their big feelings successfully.

The staff of TTU K-12 initiated an educational series late last year to nurture its young students in those areas. Second Step® programs help students build social-emotional skills, like nurturing positive relationships, managing emotions and setting goals, so they can thrive in school and life.

In mid-December each of the six advisers took a grade level, kindergarten through fifth, and presented three sessions over Zoom to each section of students and parents.

Cari Moye, TTU K-12 principal, says the school’s leadership believes social-emotional learning (SEL) is important and a great way to learn more about their students as they participate in the interactive sessions.

“Our advising team is not only able to deliver valuable information through SEL lessons, but they also are able to connect with students and families in a new way,” Moye said. “It’s been fun to work with students on important life skills and we look forward to more.”

Moye added that the program has been well-received overall, and she and her staff hope to see more families take advantage of the program this semester. Dates for upcoming sessions will be released soon.
