Generative Vocabulary: Adjectives

Vocabulary card titled Words That Describe People, Places, Things. Adjectives are words that describe people, places, or things. Beside a photo of a red flower with drops of water on it are the following: looks red, smells sweet, feels damp. Adjectives can show what someone or something is like or how they act. Lin is always polite. Use a dictionary to find the meaning of adjectives. Examples: sight: shiny, thin; hearing: noisy, squeaky; smell: fresh, rotten; touch: fuzzy, sharp; taste: sour, juicy; acts or like: sleepy, excited.

Adjectives are used to describe people, places, and things. You can use your senses to think of words to describe things. Adjectives can also be used to tell how someone, or something acts.

Look at the examples of describing words by senses above. Can you name other describing words that fit each category?

Think about the word proper. It is an adjective that describes how someone acts. Shiny could describe a dime, a mirror, or your hair. Thin could describe a cat or a mustache. These words appeal to your sense of sight.

When you come across an adjective in your reading and don’t know the meaning, you can locate the word in a dictionary.
