Spelling-Handwriting

Spelling and Handwriting

Each week you will have a Word List that matches the phonics skill you are working on for the week. You will be tested at the end of the week to see if you learned the spelling patterns with a Spelling Test on Day 5.

Day 2 will continue to focus on words with long a or i sounds with VCe syllables. Be sure the student practices handwriting for the letters Aa, Ff, Gg, Jj, Qq.

Note: You will use the same Week 3 teaching slides , slide notes , and Spelling Handouts you downloaded on Day 1.

ACTIVITIES

  • Review the Week 3 teaching slides: Spelling-Handwriting (1.3) PowerPoint.
  • On the Phonics worksheet, Long a, i (VCe), page 27 , complete each sentence. You will use each word from the box once.
  • Handwriting: Have the student practice handwriting with another copy of Printables: Manuscript Aa, Ff, Gg, Jj, Qq.
    • Check to be sure that children are gripping the pencil correctly.
      • Model: Remind children that they have been reviewing how to write lowercase letters. Briefly model how to write lowercase a, f, g, j, and q. Have children describe what they notice about the letters. (They are all formed with backwards circles; only f and j look a little like their uppercase letter partners.)
      • Explain that the long a sound can be spelled with the a-consonant-e spelling pattern; the long i sound can be spelled with the i-consonant-e pattern.
    • Save the Handwriting pages. You will choose the best set of Handwriting pages from Days 1-3 to submit for grading on Day 3.
