STAAR FAQs

What is the STAAR test?

STAAR stands for State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. The tests are based on state curriculum standards in core subjects.

What tests are required?

  • Grade 3: Math & Reading
  • Grade 4: Math & Reading
  • Grade 5: Math, Reading & Science
  • Grade 6: Math & Reading
  • Grade 7: Math & Reading
  • Grade 8: Math, Reading, Science & Social Studies
  • Grade 9-12: Algebra I, Biology, English I, English II & US History (these are the End-of-Course exams, or STAAR EOCs)

When are the tests administered?

STAAR for grades 3-8 are given in the Spring (April/May). STAAR EOC exams are given in the Spring (April/May), Summer (June) and Fall (December).

When do I TAKE THE STAAR TEST?

All students in grades 3-8 must take the STAAR exams for the grade level in which they are completing instruction for the current school year. For students taking their STAAR EOC, you will be registered when you enroll in the B semester of your course.

How do we register?

All students in grades 3-8 enrolled in the full-time, tuition-free program are automatically registered for the appropriate grade-level exams based on their enrollment status.

For students in grades 9-12 taking an EOC-tested course (Algebra 1, Biology, English 1, English 2, and US History), Texas Tech K-12 monitors student registration upon enrollment in the 'B' semester of the course. Once enrolled, Texas Tech K-12 is required to register students for the upcoming STAAR/EOC administration. Eligibility for testing is determined by the student’s course progress.

Where do we take the tests?

The testing department will register you at an approved testing site closest to your home address. We understand that traveling long distances for these exams is not everyone’s first choice, If the site where you have been registered will not work for you, you may reach out to a local school and ask them to host your test. We will need confirmation from the local school, no later than 30 days before the 1st date of the testing window. Please also notify our testing department so that we are aware.

If you live outside of Texas, you will need to find an approved proctor to administer your tests. Reach out to your testing coordinator for more information on how to set up an approved testing proctor.
