Welcome Guide

Welcome to TTU K-12! This interactive guide is intended to highlight our program and assist you in getting started with TTU K-12. However, it is very important that you carefully read the TTU K-12 Policies and Student Handbook for more in-depth information. Please read through this guide before enrolling in courses and use it as a reference throughout your coursework.

If you have any further questions, please email ttuk12@ttu.edu and/or contact your Academic Advisor.

Texas Tech K-12 Student ID Request

TTU K-12 IDs are required for all students. Students will need a state-issued ID or a TTU K-12 ID card to take exams. Students will need to complete the ID Request Form, include a passport sized photo, have the form notarized, and physically mail all documents to:

TTU K-12
P.O. Box 42191
Lubbock, TX 79409-2191

Students will receive their ID card from the Texas Tech University ID Card Office within a few weeks of submitting their form and photo. There is a $10 replacement card fee for any future cards.

Personal Graduation Plan Submission

The Personal Graduation Plan (PGP) is a state-required document that must be part of the high school student's academic information. This plan allows the advisor to guide and direct the student in selecting courses to meet the graduation requirements specific to their endorsement. A student may change their endorsement at a later date if they choose.

Discuss the endorsement options and make your selection. Print and sign (no digital signatures accepted) the document, scan or take a photo, and email the file to your academic advisor. If necessary, you can fax the document to (806) 742-7288.

Textbooks and Digital Materials

TTU K-12 has partnered with MBS Direct to supply textbooks for our students. MBS also offers a buyback program for TTU K-12 students. Select the "Get Started" link. Next, select the Site drop-down arrow and choose your grade level. You will then check each of the courses in which you have enrolled. Important Note: If your course is not listed, then no textbook is required. This can be double-checked within the online catalog or by reading the syllabus in your course. Once you have selected your courses, the required and optional materials will be shown. When you checkout, you will create an account to place your order.

If you are a TTU K-12 Texas Tuition-Free student, your digital textbook access information will be provided to your student e-mail address within one week of enrolling in your courses. Some courses have the textbooks and course materials embedded into the course, while others will require digital subscriptions. Refer to the course syllabus for textbook information.

Student Accommodation Request

TTU K-12's curriculum is developed to meet the standards of the State of Texas and the Texas Education Agency. Accommodations will be implemented based on the student's current Individual Education Plan (IEP) or 504 documentation. The student's IEP or 504 should reflect that TTU K-12 is an appropriate placement and is the student's least restrictive environment.

A student should obtain information regarding available disability accommodations before enrolling in a course or CBE. To request accommodations, a student must submit a current signed IEP or a 504 accommodation form using our online Accommodation Request Form.

What does a Learning Coach do?

With TTU K-12's virtual learning environment, you play an active and important role in your child's education. As a Learning Coach, you will have the best of two worlds. You will be able to provide your child with a level of support and guidance that no one else can, and you'll get to watch them learn, progress and succeed. Your level of involvement will vary based on your student's grade and level of independence. TTU K-12 will provide you and your student with more flexibility than you would find in a traditional school; however, we still have specific expectations for student behavior and participation. As your child's Learning Coach, you will:

  • Provide academic support, motivation, and guidance throughout the school year
  • Ensure your child is on track with assignments and coursework
  • Communicate with teachers, counselors, and staff
  • Ensure attendance requirements are being met

If you or your child's legal guardian are unable to fill this role, you can choose a family member, friend, or another trusted adult to be the Learning Coach.

Learning Coach Contract

  • I understand that I am responsible for reviewing my and my student's information in the LMS, and I will notify the school immediately of any errors, omissions, or changes.
  • I will take responsibility for ensuring that my student completes the assigned coursework and verifying they have been submitted properly.
  • I agree that I am responsible for providing all necessary computer equipment (including hardware, software, printer, and internet connection) that my student will need while enrolled and TTU K-12 is not responsible for providing any computer equipment to my student or household.
  • I agree that my computer equipment meets all minimum requirements as specified in the “Technology” section of the website and in the School Handbook. In addition, I acknowledge that if I have more than one student enrolled in TTU K-12, I will provide sufficient computer equipment for all enrolled students in my household to be able to complete their coursework.
  • I agree that my student is bound by the rules and other provisions set out in the School Handbook as well as the Terms of Use, Acceptable Use, and Privacy Policy, which are included on the website and may be updated from time to time.
  • I understand that to successfully complete their lessons and fully benefit from the online school experience, students enrolled in TTU K-12 will need some assistance from a parent/legal guardian or designated representative. The amount of assistance will vary by grade level and each student's capabilities to be self-directed and to comprehend the materials. I therefore agree to adhere to the following supervision parameters for students by grade level:
    • Elementary school assistance level: Substantial. The parent/legal guardian or designated representative will need to provide substantial support to the student throughout the school day and should be with the student physically all day. Example: Spend 4 to 6 hours per day working with your student—at this early stage, it is important to be very hands-on and available to help your young learner understand what to do each day and how to do it, gather and organize course materials as needed, and administer course lessons.
    • Middle school assistance level: Moderate. The parent/legal guardian or designated representative should be available to provide assistance to the student as needed throughout the day. The parent should be in the same general location all day but may not need to be with the student at all times, depending on the student.
    • High school assistance level: Minimal. Students are expected to perform their schoolwork independently in high school. However, a parent/legal guardian or designated representative must still monitor progress and ensure that the student completes required coursework. This adult is also expected to be available for conferences. While students may not need adult supervision during the school day, they must still be in a safe and secure environment.

You have chosen to take charge of your child’s education and it will take both of you (parent and child) to make it successful. You need to sit down and have serious discussions about how this journey will proceed. Organization does not come overnight. It will require consistency because good habits take time to develop.

Make a Plan

When it comes to organization, you need a system or a plan. You need to be mindful of the big picture – your family’s personal and educational goals for your child. Do you want them to stay on track to graduate on time or do you want them to accelerate their learning and graduate early? What extenuating circumstances does your child have? Our students are unique; and their situations are just as unique. How will you juggle their uniqueness with their education?

You need to know what your child needs to accomplish each day to achieve their goals. Invest in the proper tools to help you and your child get organized. Have a day planner, a calendar, or a list.

Crossing off completed tasks helps to keep you on track and gives your child a sense of accomplishment. The gradebook in each course is a great tracking tool as well. Organization takes a conscious effort, but with any new behavior, it will become easier with time.

Stick to a Schedule

To create the best learning environment for your family and to achieve success with TTU K-12, you need to have some kind of schedule for your school day. Flexibility is one of the major advantages to our program. However, flexibility does not mean you have no schedule or plan for your child to complete lessons in a timely manner. What works best for your child may not be what works best for another. Maybe your child needs to work three days a week, eight hours a day, or maybe he/she will work three intense hours in the middle of the day. Or maybe he/she needs to recover from surgery for a week or two before getting back their studies. Decide what works for your child and stick to it!

While many of our students are doing extraordinary things outside of their education, they are still children and may lack the maturity to complete their courses without parental guidance. Even if you are more relaxed about scheduling schoolwork, having a routine brings structure and familiarity. Your kids will know what to expect each day and become more organized. Time management is the key to studies not being neglected and excelling with TTU K-12.

Monitor Progress

You must monitor your child’s work and progress. Don’t just assume or rely on your child to tell you what he/she has finished. You must take the time to follow up with them and/or their instructors regarding their progress. This is imperative to your child’s success. It is your responsibility to check his/her progress frequently; so, he/she is held accountable for completing the work required to succeed. You may check progress by logging in utilizing your student’s username and password. View their progress in each class by going to "My Grades." Selecting "All" shows work graded, work submitted, and upcoming work. Please note that the conversation cloud includes feedback from the instructor.

Attendance/Progress Requirements

  • In your all-online program, attendance “will” be defined as progress within each semester course.
  • You will have six months to complete each semester course.
  • You must maintain enrollment in a minimum of four semester courses.
  • You must make weekly progress in each course by working in each course a minimum of three days per seven-day period.
  • You must complete a minimum of 5% of course assignments in every seven-day period. For example, if your course has 20 assignments, you need to complete a minimum of one per week. If your course has 60 assignments, you must average a minimum of three per week.
  • Please note:
    • Completing the minimum number of assignments does not guarantee you will complete within the six-month time frame.
    • Completing the minimum number of assignments and courses may not maintain your appropriate grade level or anticipated graduation date.
    • If your progress is adequate, your parent may request “vacation” days.
  • Extensions are not available, so you must schedule your weekly progress to complete the minimum of four courses during the six-month period.
  • Failure to meet minimum progress requirements may cause TTU K-12 to implement truancy processes and may result in your removal from the program.

Instructor Contact

Students should be proactive in communicating with their course instructors regarding any documented accommodations, difficulty in course work, or any issues of concern. Students should always contact their instructors through their course portal. Click "Messages" on the left navigation column, then click "Create Message."

Use the "To" to choose your instructors name, ensure you click the arrow to insert it in the "Recipients" box. Compose your message and click submit. Your message will be sent to your instructor and the response from the instructor will be in your "Inbox." Instructors have 24 hours to respond to your message. Please contact ttuk12@ttu.edu or your academic advisor if you have any difficulty with reaching your instructor.

Pacing and Time Management

Students have six months from the date of enrollment to complete a course. However, courses are designed to be completed in 12 to 16 weeks, working at a pace similar to a brick-and-mortar school. A student cannot complete any course in less than 30 days, or the grade will be invalidated.

Courses are designed to be progressive. It is important for the student to work through the lessons in order. This enables students to receive feedback and build upon skills acquired. Some courses have locked assignments that will open once the teacher has provided appropriate feedback. Example: Once an instructor has approved a student's research topic, the link to submit the research paper will be available.

TTU K-12 courses are self-paced, and none of the lessons have hard due dates. For this reason, students should develop personal time management plans to maintain steady course progress toward course completion.

Students and parents should work together at the end of each week to plan the following week. There are two ways to plan your coursework: by the clock or by the lesson. Planning by the clock mimics the traditional school day that many students are accustomed. Time should be set aside each day to work on each course. It is helpful to have a timer or clock always on hand with your school materials if you prefer this method.

Many of our students have chosen TTU K-12 for a non-traditional approach to learning. Those students may prefer to work by the lesson. For this progression management plan, students should choose a day of the week for each course they are enrolled in. On the given day, they should complete one lesson from that course. Days that have not been assigned a course (i.e. Fridays, Saturdays, and/or Sundays) should be treated as “flex” or “catch up” days to complete or correct any lessons that did not get addressed on the assigned day.

Lesson Submission

This information is located in the left-hand navigation column of each course. Listed in the column are links to resources, syllabus, lessons, and final exam information. Specific information and instructions about how to submit lessons/assignments/pdfs is provided in your course syllabus. It is very important that you take the time to read how the instructor requires assignments to be submitted including formatting, heading, and naming of the document.

Lesson Grading and Feedback

Instructors have two to three business days to grade online assignments and five business days to grade print Credit by Exam (CBE). Please plan ahead to ensure your schedule allows for this grading time.

Instructors will provide feedback on assignments. Feedback from instructors can be in the form of a rubric, a conversation bubble, or by a numerical grade. Feedback can be seen by clicking on the lesson title in “My Grades,” clicking on the conversation cloud/bubble in the grade area, or by clicking on the “View Rubric” under the title in the grade area.

Resubmission of Lessons

Lessons that earned a score of below 70% may be resubmitted if the instructor has indicated the student may do so. Instructors will notify students if they are required to resubmit all or a portion of a lesson. This notification may be in messaging or included in the conversation cloud giving feedback. If a resubmission is allowed, students will only be permitted one resubmission per lesson. Lessons cannot be resubmitted after the final exam has been taken.

Final Exam

The final exam will not be available (visible) until ALL lessons, checkpoints, and assessments are submitted and graded. It is important to take your final exam while the information is fresh in your mind. Do not procrastinate taking your final thinking you need a break. The final exam (and all course requirements) must be completed prior to the expiration date of the course.

Retake of Final Exam

Only students who score below a 70 on the final exam have the option to take final exam B. Final exam B is only available for 15 days after the first exam is completed, before the course permanently closes.

Online examinations include remote proctoring that alleviates the need for a physical proctor. Our remote proctoring solution is a tool called Proctorio. Using Proctorio, students are able to take the online exam anytime, anywhere, once they are ready. There is no need to secure a proctor, collaborate on an exam time, and travel to the agreed-upon testing location. Students can take the exam from their home computer at any time. Students should be proactive learning about Proctorio. Do not wait until the day you plan on taking your final to learn about Proctorio. We have compiled a list of helpful Proctorio Tips for you. Proctorio has some additional Support for Test-Takers page. Students are required to have a webcam (USB or internal) with a microphone when taking the exam. Students are also required to use the Google Chrome browser and download the Proctorio Chrome Extension before attempting their exam.

  • You will be required to have a valid ID and will be asked to test your microphone, speakers, and scan your testing environment before beginning your exam.
  • Proctorio Live - If you need help, click the shield in the upper right-hand corner of the Blackboard page to activate Proctorio's Live Chat.
  • Privacy - Students and parents must understand that this remote recording device is purchased and controlled by the student and that recording from any private residence must be done with the permission of any person residing in that residence. To avoid any concerns in this regard, students should select private spaces for the testing.

Course grade will be calculated as follows:

  • 50% coursework average
  • 50% summative assessment average, including the final exam
    • Designated summative assessments will be defined in the course syllabus
  • A passing course grade is 70 or higher

TTU K-12 does require both tuition-based and tuition-free students to complete all high school STAAR/EOC tests to receive a high school diploma.

Students residing in Texas should pre-register online for EOC exams, and should be enrolled in, or have completed, the “B” semester of the course for which the EOC will be taken.

STAAR/EOC High School Exam Requirements:

  • Algebra I
  • Biology
  • English I
  • English II
  • U.S. History

For Grades 3-8, only tuition-free students will be required to take the appropriate STAAR exams. They are optional in the tuition-based program.

Students residing outside of Texas will need to discuss out-of-state testing processes with the TTU K-12’s testing coordinator.

You will be contacted upon enrollment in a STAAR tested subject. For additional STAAR/EOC questions, concerns, and other information, please contact Kaci Scott at Kaci.Scott@ttu.edu or 806-834-5649.

Academic Integrity

The aim of TTU K-12 is to foster the spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. It is considered a serious offense for students to attempt to pass off unoriginal work. As part of the Texas Tech University System, TTU K-12’s policy aligns with the student conduct policy of the university regarding academic integrity. Please refer to the TTU K-12 Policies for more information regarding academic dishonesty.

Course Extensions

Course extensions are no longer available.

Requesting a Transcript

Students must be a current or former TTU K-12 student and have completed at least one TTU K-12 course (CBEs do not count) before a transcript will be given. All transcript requests are $5.00 per transcript unless a school is requesting the transcript. The Transcript Request Form may be submitted online.

Enrollment Verification

To request an official Verification of Enrollment for TEA driver’s education certification, social security, or other reasons, students must be enrolled as a full-time TTU K-12 student (four courses) and show steady progression in all courses (an average of one lesson each week per course). You may request a Verification of Enrollment from your Academic Advisor.
