Student Organization Advisor Resources
The Student Org Advisor's Role
As outlined in the Student Handbook & Code of Conduct, each registered student organization is required to maintain a full-time university faculty or staff advisor available to the officers and members for consultation regarding the affairs of the organization.
- Oversee adherence to university standards, rules and/or policies as well as the organization's constitution and by-laws.
- Attend organizational meetings and functions (encouraged)
- Facilitate and support the organization's program planning and decision making
- Certify the organization's expenditures by co-signing all checks or vouchers (encouraged)
Any new or replacement faculty/staff advisor should be reported (via TechConnect Roster) within 10 university business days and sign the organizations Advisor Agreement Form. Failure to do so may result in suspended privileges for the organization.
Certain student organizations are assigned a faculty/staff advisor by the department to oversee the administration of those areas, groups and resources.
Established full-time university faculty or staff members, who reduce employment hours below full-time status and maintain an office on-campus, may continue to function as the "Primary" advisor of a student organization with the approval of Student Involvement.
Secondary Advisors and Coaches
Registered student organizations may have additional advisors, i.e. coaches (typical of sports clubs) or alumni advisors, if permitted by their constitution and/or by-laws.
Secondary advisors or coaches not affiliated with the university should also be included when filling out the annual Student Org Registration, complete with names, addresses, telephone numbers, and emails.
Advisor, coaches, and instructors not affiliated with the university should review OP 70.21 for additional information and direction regarding volunteers. Links to the volunteer forms are found at the bottom of OP 70.21. Completed forms should be sent to Human Resources for review and approval. Comprehensive background checks are required for all volunteers. To submit a background check request, click here. If you have any additional questions on the status or completion of the forms, please email Human Resources.
