Study Renewable Energy Abroad
Texas Tech Universitys Renewable Energy Program offers transformative study abroad opportunities in Costa Rica and Peru, providing hands-on experiences with real-world renewable energy applications. These immersive programs allow students to witness cutting-edge sustainability practices while exploring the rich cultures and ecosystems of two of the most fascinating regions in the world.
Costa Rica: 99% Renewable Energy in Action
Costa Rica achieves 99% of its electricity through renewable sources, including hydroelectricity, geothermal energy, biomass, solar power, and wind energy. This program offers an opportunity to explore these technologies firsthand through guided visits to energy facilities across the country. Participants will examine how national policies, regulations, and legal considerations shape Costa Ricas renewable energy development. Additionally, students will study at Texas Tech University's Costa Rica campus in San Jose. The program is open to all TTU students with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and at least sophomore classification.
Program Highlights:
- Tour state-of-the-art renewable energy facilities.
- Study at Texas Techs Costa Rica campus in San José while engaging with local energy experts.
- Explore the lush rainforests, volcanoes, and biodiversity hotspots that make Costa Rica a world-renowned eco-destination.
Courses Offered:
RE 4320: Independent Study in Renewable Energy: Global Energy
Peru: Renewable Energy for Community Impact
This faculty-led program focuses on wind energy studies in Iquitos, Peru. Peru is home to diverse landscapes—from the Amazon rainforest to the Andes Mountains—where access to modern energy solutions can be limited. In this program, students go beyond the classroom, using renewable energy to create real change. The program is open to students with a minimum GPA of 2.0 and at least sophomore classification.
Making a Difference:
- Past participants built solar-powered water pumps to provide clean drinking water to remote communities.
- Students installed off-grid solar systems to power local schools, helping to bring reliable electricity to areas that previously had none.
Program Highlights:
- Gain hands-on experience with renewable energy technologies.
- Learn how renewable energy is transforming rural communities in the Amazon.
- Work alongside locals to understand the human impact of energy access.
