Room 150

TLPDC Room 150 is an active learning classroom (ALC). ALCs include deliberate design attributes that are specifically intended to promote active learning. These typically include moveable furniture that can be reconfigured into a variety of different setups with ease, seating that places students in small groups, plentiful horizontal and/or vertical writing surfaces such as whiteboards, and easy access to learning technologies. Our space has a polycentric or acentric design, meaning that there is no clearly defined front of the room. Instead, the instructor has a station that is located in the middle of the space or can be moved altogether. This room is set up with 8 roundtables seating 5 people at each table and can seat a total of 40 people. If tables are removed, this room can accommodate approximately 70-80 people in audience-style seating. This room is best used to facilitate conversations, group work, brainstorming, and problem-solving. It is equipped with a computer, three display screens, and Solstice software to allow participants to share media. Learn about using the Solstice app on their website: https://www.mersive.com/go/

Although the room can meet most technology needs, please keep in mind that it is not a traditional meeting space and cannot be reserved for semester-long classes.

Are you interested in learning more about active learning spaces? We recommend this blog post, Active Learning Classrooms, written by our friend, Dr. Derek Bruff at Vanderbilt University Center for Teaching. We would also love to talk with you about how this design can influence your teaching and your interactions with students as well as their interactions with each other. Please contact Ken Griffith or Suzanne Tapp for more information.
