Tech Livestock Judging Team Takes Fourth at International Competition

Texas Tech’s Livestock Judging Team finished fourth on Tuesday (Nov. 13) at the North American International Livestock Exposition in Louisville. The team was second in reasons, second in sheep, fourth in performance cattle and fourth in swine, while two Red Raiders finished in the top-ten overall rankings. (more…)


‘Certainly Disheartening:’ Decrease in Cotton Futures Could Affect Local Crops

West Texas cotton grower Doug Hlavaty says cotton futures are essential for farmers to plan when to sell and what to plant in their next crop. “This year the prices started out 20 cents higher than they are right now. Last year at this time December’s futures were around a dollar, that was December 12, December 13 cotton futures are around 76 cents, so see it’s quite a bit different from last year,” said the farmer who tends to irrigated and non-irrigated fields 12 miles south of Lubbock. Icon Makeover; Repairs Completed on Historic 1926 Texas Tech Dairy Barn

Texas Tech University’s historic dairy barn received a facelift this fall. The structure’s exterior now dons a new coat of paint, and all roof shingles have been replaced on the treasured campus monument. “The dairy barn is a vital part of the agricultural heritage of Texas Tech, and I’m pleased that the [university] administration recognized the value of the structure and committed the funds for the new roof,” said Michael Galyean, dean of Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Pig Roast: CASNR presents ‘Outstanding Agriculturalist’ awards to area leaders

Texas Tech’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources will honor three area residents with Gerald W. Thomas Outstanding Agriculturalist Awards on Thursday (Nov. 8) during its annual Pig Roast at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center Banquet Hall. The Pig Roast also features scholarship donors, recipients and intercollegiate judging teams. (more…)


Casanova Named Instructor with Landscape Architecture Department

Christine Casanova, an expert in design methods for merchandising, has been named an instructor in Texas Tech University’s Department of Landscape Architecture, according to officials with the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. Texas Tech’s Livestock Judging Team Finishes Third at American Royal

Texas Tech University’s Livestock Judging Team finished in third place on Saturday (Nov. 3) at the American Royal Intercollegiate Livestock Judging Contest in Kansas City. The contest tested the participants’ knowledge of cattle, sheep, goats and swine, as well as, oral reasons.  (more…)


Tech Meat Judging Team Sets Record Score at Cargill Meat Solutions Contest

The Texas Tech Meat Judging Team aced the 30th annual Cargill Meat Solutions’ Intercollegiate Meat Judging Contest on Sunday (Nov. 4) in Plainview, posting an all-time meat judging record score of 4,257 points and shattering the previous record score of 4,245 points set by Texas A&M a decade ago.
