Grein, Taber Receive Texas Tech Student Success ‘Tech10’ Designation
By: Norman Martin
Two graduating seniors from Texas Tech's Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources have been honored with their selection to the university's Student Life & Academic Innovation and Student Success Tech10 initiative.
James Grein, an animal science major from Cypress, Texas, and Emma Taber, an agricultural communications major from Bakersfield, California, are two of 10 individuals chosen from across campus based on the four principles of the Red Raider Spirit.
These principles include a commitment to academic excellence, commitment to leadership on campus, commitment to service, and a commitment to Striving for Honor. The criteria for Tech10 selection are based on an application and interview process. The awardees were recognized during a special presentation at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (Apr. 23) at the Frazier Alumni Pavilion.
“Texas Tech has challenged me to be a better person, so working to elevate, support, and amplify the university has become a passion for me,” Taber said. “Every opportunity for involvement or leadership has left me inspired and humbled. To be recognized like this is more than I could have pictured for myself when I began classes as a freshman in fall 2020.”
Both students were very active during their academic career. Taber was a member of the Davis College Student Success Center's Agri-Techsans Program and was a student assistant in the Davis College Dean's Office. In addition, she has served as president of Tech's Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow (ACT) and director of communications for Tech's Collegiate Cattlemen's Association (CCA).
Separately, Grein noted, “I've grown so much through my involvement at Texas Tech. I learned about the agricultural industry, how to better myself, and gained a desire to be a leader and friend to everyone. I'm very grateful for my time at Texas Tech University and when I started college four years ago, I never thought I'd be where I am today.”
He was a member of the 2023 Reserve National Champion Meat Animal Evaluation Team, the 2022 Reserve National Champion Meat Science Quiz Bowl Team, and competed on the 2022 Texas Tech Meat Judging Team. In addition, he served as secretary of the Davis College Student Agricultural Council, secretary of Block & Bridle, and secretary of the Meat Science Association throughout his years. Outside of leadership roles, Grein worked in undergraduate research under Professor Dale Woerner and Assistant Professor Arlene Garcia.
After graduation, he will be continuing his education at the Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine as a second-year veterinary student.
