AFS veterinary epidemiologist receives NAMA outstanding educator award
Guy Loneragan, a Texas Tech veterinary epidemiologist and professor of food safety and public health, has been selected to receive the “Harry L. Rudnick Outstanding Educator Award” from the North American Meat Association. The honor was presented to the Tech professor on Friday (Mar. 21) at the association’s annual meeting in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
“Guy Loneragan is very deserving of this honor,” said NAMA Co-President Tony Gahn. The outstanding educator’s award is presented annually in recognition of outstanding contributions made in the field of food science education, he said. The award, established in 1969, is named for the first executive vice president of the National Association of Hotel and Restaurant Meat Purveyors.
In the past Loneragan has served as a member of NAMA’s Salmonella Think Tank, and is performing beef check-off funded Salmonella research on the association’s behalf. In addition, program officials note that Loneragan has traveled with association staff members to help establish a relationship with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that has furthered other beef check-off funded research efforts.
Loneragan is a member of the National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods, International Association of Food Protection, Academy of Veterinary Consultants for which he serves on the Board of Directors, the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association on which he is part of the Salmonella Working Group, Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers Association, Texas Cattle Feeders Association, and American Association of Bovine Practitioners.
Program officials claim the association has representatives in the United States, Canada and Mexico, and a community of more than 600 companies. Among its interests are regulatory advocacy, educational opportunities, and promoting a spirit of partnership in the industry.
