Azel’s Petry leads Texas Tech Horse Judging Team at Nat’l Spring Contest

Earlier this month North Central Texas College hosted the National Horse Judging Team Coaches’ Association Spring Contest at its Gainesville campus. And at the event’s senior college division competition Texas Tech’s Amy Petry dominated, winning overall high individual in the contest, with individual wins in the performance and reasons divisions.

The junior animal science major from Azel helped carry the Texas Tech team to a fifth-high team award. The University of Florida won the senior college competition, with Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, Iowa State, and Tech rounding out the ‘Top 5’ senior college teams.

Other Tech’s team members include:

  • Charlotte Bingham, a junior animal science major from Lubbock
  • Rebecca Carlisle, a freshman animal science major from McKinney
  • Chelsey Caruthers, a senior animal science major from Ingram
  • Mara Heitkamp, a freshman animal science major from Katy
  • Kyla Hunton, a senior animal science major from Lubbock
  • Kyndall King, a senior psychology major from Burleson
  • Brittani Pfau, a senior agricultural communications major from White Oak
  • Charlie Snider, a freshman animal science major from Corinth
  • Trista Southall, a junior animal science major from Lamesa
  • Miranda Thomas, a freshman animal science major from Colleyville
  • Laurie Tolboom, a sophomore agricultural communications major from Dublin
  • Caylin Wright, a sophomore animal science major from Richmond

The team is coached by Jane Bagley, a visiting associate professor with Tech’s Department of Animal and Food Sciences and Tech graduate student Hillary Fink. “This is a team with lots of potential,” Bagley said. “Only one of the members had ever judged horses before coming to Texas Tech. I’m excited for the students and believe they can be very competitive when they continue judging next fall.”
