Chair's Message

Fall 2018

simonThe start of a new academic year brings new energy to Texas Tech's campus. Here in Chemical Engineering, we have even more excitement than usual, with the $ 1 M Valero Experiential Learning Laboratory coming on board this fall, as well as the forthcoming Morrow Energy Pilot Plant, which will be formally announced at the end of September. Both will provide unique hands-on learning opportunities for our students. With our strong research programs and other initiatives, like our mentor program, we are leaders in the University's quest to be one of the top public institutions in the nation. Enjoy the newsletter for other exciting news, including the following achievements:

•  A record eighty-five B.S. students graduated in May 2018! Kudos to these new alumni!

•  Undergraduate and graduate students received recognition for their excellence, including Ph.D. student Jennifer Hewitt winning a Fulbright and the ChemE Car Team's sweep at Regionals.

•  A formal alumni mentoring program was initiated in spring 2018 with 68 alumni and student matches. The program will be enlarged this fall to include peer mentoring.

• Eight of our seventeen faculty members were honored in the past year for excellence in research and/or teaching, and all of our young faculty have now received external funding for their research!

Please do not hesitate to get involved. Sign up to be a mentor. Join the Chemical Engineering Academy. Help us make our vision of excellence a reality. And, of course, do not hesitate to email me or stop by the department when you are in town!
