Energize to Globalize

Get an inside look at the first TTU Energize to Globalize event held in Costa Rica.

Society of Women Engineers (SWE) at Texas Tech University successfully put on their first international outreach event! Seven members of the TTU SWE section collaborated with seven engineering students from the University of Costa Rica to plan and host Energize to Globalize. Energize to Globalize took place at the University of Costa Rica in San José, Costa Rica, March 18, 2016. Sixty-seven high school students, about 50 percent of whom were female, attended the event to learn about engineering and university opportunities. Software, recycling and civil engineering workshops taught high school attendees how to think analytically and use their hands to apply engineering principles. As keynote speaker, Dean Sacco, from Texas Tech University, spoke about his experiences as an astronaut and challenged all present to push their limits and strive to make the world a better place.

The Texas Tech students spent the week of spring break living with and learning from students of the University of Costa Rica. They learned about the history and culture of Costa Rica and experienced the life of a college student there. Aside from the Energize to Globalize event, the trip was a mixture of vacation and business consisting of visits to the IBM and HPE locations in San José as well as a tour of a volcano, the rain forest and Manuel Antonio beach. From the months of planning Energize to Globalize, the TTU SWE members learned how to work with people of different cultures, and from the weeklong experience abroad they gained lifelong friends.
