James W. and Lindl Graves Endowed Scholarship

James Graves

The James W. and Lindl T. Graves Scholarship Endowment was established by the Agricultural Economics Association in 2002 in honor of Dr. James W. Graves. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students of all classifications, majoring in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.

Dr. Graves received degrees from Cornell University, Texas A&M University, and Michigan State University and began his career at Texas Tech University in 1961. In his 35 year tenure at Texas Tech University, he taught and advised more students than any other individual in the history of the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics. In 1998, the year Dr. Graves retired, he received the American Agricultural Economics Association's Eagle Award for his contributions to the agricultural economics profession. The next year he was recognized by the Texas Tech University Board of Regents as an Emeritus Professor of Agricultural and Applied Economics.

Dr. Graves received numerous awards throughout his career, including: President's Excellence in Teaching Award, the National Association of Collegiate Teachers of Agriculture Teaching Award of Merit, charter membership in the Texas Tech's Teaching Academy, Outstanding Teacher by Mortar Board, and Outstanding Teacher of the Year in Agricultural Economics several times. He was also active in various service, collegiate and community organizations. Dr. Graves taught more than twenty different courses throughout his career and had one of the largest impacts on the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics of any professor. Dr. James Wilton Graves, “Jim,” passed away surrounded by family on Sunday, December 27, 2020 at the age of 91.
