The Sujit K. Roy Memorial Endowed Scholarship
The Sujit Roy Memorial Scholarship was established by the Agricultural Economics Association in 1998. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate and graduate students in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics.
Sujit Roy was born in Santiniketan, West Bengal, India in 1936. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in Economics at Visva Bharati University in India. He then received a Master of Science from the University of Toronto and a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University; both of these degrees were in Agricultural Economics. He began teaching for Texas Tech University in the Department of Agricultural and Applied Economics in 1968 while still working on his Ph.D. Dr. Roy taught for almost thirty years in both graduate and undergraduate courses. He served as Interim Chairman of the department from 1981 to 1982 and again from 1994 to 1996. He was actively involved in many graduate and doctoral students programs and thesis or dissertation committees.
Dr. Roy conducted research in various areas of agriculture and authored or co-authored over 50 publications, including articles in the American Journal of Agricultural Economics and the Southern Journal of Agricultural Economics. He received various awards and honors, including: election into the Outstanding Educators of America, Mortar Board Award for excellence in teaching, AMOCO Distinguished Teaching Award, numerous awards through student elections, and membership into several honor societies.
Dr. Roy was married to his wife, Prakrita, for 33 years and they had a son, Jashojit and his wife Helen, and a daughter, Barata. He passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer in February 1997.
