Lewis Eggenberger Endowed Fellowship for Agricultural Education and Communications

 

The Lewis Eggenberger Fellowship Endowment was established by graduates, faculty and friends of Dr. Lewis Eggenberger in 1999. The purpose of this fund is to provide graduate fellowships in the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications.

Dr. Eggenberger attended Kansas State University and received his Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Education in 1952 and his Master of Science in Agricultural Mechanics in 1956. He continued on to Iowa State University where he received his doctorate in Vocational Education with an emphasis on Agricultural Education and minors in Agricultural Mechanics and Agronomy in 1964. He held various jobs while continuing his education, including half time Agricultural Mechanics teacher at Kansas State, Vocational Agriculture Teacher at Winfield Public School in Winfield, Kansas, half time Agricultural Mechanics Instructor at Iowa State University, and finally came to Texas Tech University in 1961 as a Professor in the Department of Agricultural Education and Mechanization Department, now known as the Department of Agricultural Education and Communications.

Over his time, he taught fourteen different undergraduate and graduate level courses and served as the graduate committee chairman for 222 students. He directed 25 theses and 42 Master's reports and advised an additional 155 students who did need to complete a report or thesis. He conducted various workshops for vocational agriculture teachers, created various videos and publications on agricultural mechanics and education, and continually contributed to the improvement of agricultural teaching and curriculum.

Dr. Eggenberger was a member of various professional, collegiate and honorary organizations and was consistently recognized for his contributions to the field of agricultural education. Some of his honors and awards include: Distinguished Agricultural Education Service Award for the Southern Region in 1989, Distinguished Service Award from the Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas in 1972, Honorary State Farmer from the Texas FFA Association, Teacher of the Semester from the Texas Tech University Collegiate FFA Chapter in 1990, and the President's Excellence in Teaching Award from Texas Tech University in 1991.

Dr. Eggenberger was married to Mrs. Florence Eggenberger and they had six children, David, Steven, Diane, Cynthia, Larry, and Ron.
