“Big Ed” Wilkes Endowed Scholarship

The “Big Ed” Wilkes Scholarship Endowment for Agricultural Education and Communications was established by Marsha Wilkes, Lou Diekemper, and friends of “Big Ed” Wilkes in 1999. The scholarship is awarded to students of any classification majoring in Agricultural Education and Communication from the KRFE (580 AM) radio broadcasting area.

Ed was the host of a humor and news talk show in the Lubbock radio Station KRFE. He passed away in December 1998. Ed moved to Lubbock in 1942 where we attended Lubbock High School. He continued on to Texas Tech University where he received his degree in Agricultural economics. Before becoming a radio show host, he was a vocational agriculture teacher in Graham and then a sales manager for National Peat Moss Company. Ed was recognized by the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources as an Outstanding Agriculturalist in 1985 and the Tech Ex-Students Association with a Distinguished Service Award in 1987. He was known for his strong opinions on agriculture, his outgoing personality, and his generous compassion.
