Max and Roma Miller Endowed Scholarship
The Max and Roma Miller Scholarship Endowment was established in 2011 by Sam Miller, Monty Paul Miller, and Charles Anderson in honor of Max and Roma Miller to provide scholarships to full-time undergraduate students majoring in food science who have completed a minimum of 60 credit hours, including at least three courses in food science, with an overall GPA of 3.25 or greater. In addition, preference is given to students who have completed elective courses in chemistry or math beyond the minimum degree requirements.
Max Miller came to Texas Tech University from Brownfield, TX in 1955 to receive a degree in Dairy Management, which he finished in three years. He then went to Michigan State University to receive his master"s degree before returning to Texas Tech in 1960 to join the teaching staff. He returned to Michigan State to receive his doctorate before returning to Texas Tech University in 1971. In 2014, he was honored for fifty years of service to Texas Tech University. When he first began teaching in 1960, Miller would take his lab students to the Dairy Barn to educate them about inspection of dairy facilities. He has since taught everything from beginning dairy and food science classes, to food microbiology and food chemistry, food analysis, fruits and vegetables processing and the ";field trips" to local food plants class still offered today. Max and Roma"s two sons also graduated from Texas Tech University. Paul received a degree in Agricultural Sciences/Food Technology in 1994. Sam earned a degree in Electrical Engineering in 1988 and a degree in Agricultural Sciences/Food Technology in 1994. In December 2013, Sam was tragically killed and the Sam Miller Memorial Endowed Scholarship in food science was created in his memory.
