Howard Alford Memorial Scholarship

Howard Alford Memorial Scholarship was established in 1974 by the Plains Cotton Cooperative Association's (PCCA) Board of Directors in memory of the cooperative's former chairman of the board. This scholarship is available to entering freshman students enrolled in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources. Selection is based on high school record, SAT or ACT test scores, and financial need.

PCCA is a marketing cooperative owned by farmers in Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas and New Mexico dedicated to supplying sustainably-grown, high-quality cotton fiber around the world. In addition to cotton marketing based in Lubbock, Texas, PCCA also owns cotton warehouse facilities in Texas, Oklahoma and Kansas and develops and offers software programs and networks to local co-op gins that help add more value to our grower-owners' cotton.

Howard Alford was President of the Plains Cotton Cooperative Association and the Farmers Cooperative Compress. He was born in Lubbock to Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Alford, pioneer Lubbock residents whose farm was located at what is now 19th Street and Slide Road. He was a graduate of Lubbock High School and was a member of the Westerner football team, the "Cinderella Team" which won the state championship in 1939, and later played football at Texas Tech under Pete Cawthon and Dell Morgan. He also served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

He was a member of the board of directors of First National Bank and the president of the board of the College Avenue Co-Op Gin. He was also President of Cotton, Inc., a national marketing development organization headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina. He had served as President of the Cattlemen's Commission Co., Vice Chairman of Cotton Producers Institute, and served on the board of several regional cooperatives. In 1964, he was named 19th Congressional District Chairman of the Rural Texans for Johnson and Humphrey.

Howard married Milbry Jo Bell in 1942. The two had one daughter, Ann, and two sons, John and Don.
