John Henry Dean, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

The John Henry Dean, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in 1981 by Mr. and Mrs. Bruce L. Boswell in memory of Mrs. Boswell's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Henry Dean, Jr., Mrs. Boswell is the granddaughter of Carrie Slaughter Dean and the great-granddaughter of Colonel Christopher Columbus Slaughter, who was a pioneer West Texas rancher. These scholarships are available to students enrolled in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources based on leadership. Students are eligible who reside in or graduated High School in the following counties: Dawson, Cochran, Uvalde, Parker, Hockley, Hill, Borden, Johnson, and Bandera.

First Lieutenant John Henry Dean, Jr. was the son of John Henry Dean, Sr and Carrie Rebecca Slaughter of Dallas, Texas. He was married to the former Helen Louise Robinson of Fort Worth, Texas. Together, they had two children, John Henry III and Patricia. He was the grandson of Colonel C. C. Slaughter, a wealthy ranch owner, cattleman, and philanthropist, and the family were all well-known cattle ranchers in the community of Dallas. He attended Terrill School and Culver Military Academy of Culver, Indiana. He was superintendent of the National Hereford Show at the Texas State Fair for two years and brought the show to Texas from Kansas City. He was also Vice President of the Texas Hereford Association. He entered the Civil Air Patrol, along with his airplane, at Rearwin.

He was piloting a Civil Air Patrol plane on a routine flight from Beaumont to Mexia, Texas, and upon attempting to land at the Mexia Airport, the plane appeared to get caught in a downdraft and gust of wind which flipped the aircraft into a spin, crashing into a nearby lumber yard. Killed along with him in the crash was 1st Lieutenant Robert D Ward, also of Dallas, Texas. Another flyer, Lieutenant Dell John Gallier managed to escape the crash with only relatively minor injuries.
