Joe S. McIlhaney Endowed Scholarship

The Joe S. McIlhaney Scholarship Endowment was established in 2000 from the estate of Joe S. McIlhaney. These scholarships are open to all students of all classifications in the Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources.

Joe S. McIlhaney was born in 1902 before moving to Lubbock in 1925. He married Lo Halbert in 1934 and established McIlhaney Creamery for production and sale of butter. Sales offices were located in Lubbock, Beaumont, San Antonio, and El Paso. He ultimately shipped butter as far as the West Coast and Chicago.

With the advent of oleo margarine, butter sales declined at which time he established McIlhaney Dairy Products Company. He then manufactured and distributed multiple dairy products. Retail delivery was accomplished by horse- drawn milk wagons in the Lubbock area. His company was the last to discontinue this colorful practice.

Joe sold his business in 1950. He made donations of equipment to Texas Tech and supported the Scottish Rite Children's Hospital and the Texas Boy's Ranch. He was a life member of the Masonic Blue Lodge, Scottish Rite, Texas Tech Dad's Club and the First Baptist Church where he served as deacon.

Joe and Lo had five children; two daughters and three sons. He passed away in 1999. Lo passed away in 2004.
