Dr. M. Clinton & Priscilla Althaus and Walter A. & Gean Hester Endowed Scholarship

The Dr. M. Clinton & Priscilla Althaus and Walter A. & Gean Hester Scholarship Endowment was established by Mr. Malcom Hester and Mrs. Alice Althaus Hester in 1997 in memory and recognition of their parents' guidance and sacrifice in order for their children to become Texas Tech University graduates. The scholarship is awarded to junior, senior or graduate students majoring in Landscape Architecture with a minimum of 64 credit hours, a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher, and a U.S. citizenship. Recipients must demonstrate financial need, as well as be involved and participate in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Davis College of Agricultural Sciences & Natural Resources.

Malcom and Alice both graduated from Texas Tech University in 1987 with Bachelor of Science in Park Administration. Malcom passed away in 2002. He was a skillful leader and gifted landscape architect. He went on to earn a Master of Landscape Architecture from the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, and he served on the Board of Trustees for The Center for Health Care Services and on the Castle Hills City Council.

Walter A. Hester passed away in 2009. He graduated from Amarillo High School in 1939. He then served in the Army Air Corp in Europe as an aerial photographer during WWII. He married Vera Gean Bumpers in 1949. They had 2 children, Mark and Malcolm. His wife, Gean, and son, Malcolm, both preceded him in death. Walter owned Pope Photos Records during the 1960s and then was employed for over 20 years at West Texas State University as a sports photographer and photography instructor. Upon retiring, he bought several acres of land which he farmed. He was a long-time member of Trinity United Methodist Church.
