The J. Owen and Francine Gilbreath Endowed Scholarship was established in 2001 by Mr. and Mrs. J. Owen Gilbreath. The scholarship is awarded to undergraduate students in the Department of Plant and Soil Science with a special interest in agronomy.

J. Owen Gilbreath received his Bachelor of Arts in History from Texas Tech University in 1943. He is a former Texas Tech Foundation Board Member. He is involved in the family business, Gilbreath Property Company and retired President of Agrigentics, LP. He has served on the board of directors for: State National Bank of West Texas, Covenant Foundation and Wells Fargo Bank Texas.

His wife, Francine, received a Bachelor of Arts in Zoology in 1946 from Texas Tech University. They had two children- Jim, Jr. and Kimberly. His son, Jim Gilbreath, Jr., graduated from Texas Tech University in 1970 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing and is involved with the family business and serving on the Lubbock City Council.
