Howard Taylor Memorial Endowed Scholarship

The Howard Taylor Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by Mrs. Marjorie Taylor, family and friends in the memory of Howard Taylor. The scholarship is awarded to graduate students in the Department of Plant and Soil Science who are agronomy majors.

Dr. Howard Taylor passed away in 1991 after a sudden illness in Frankfurt, Germany while attending a scientific meeting in Vienna. He graduated from Texas Tech University in 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Soil Science and completed his Ph.D. at the University of California-Davis in Agronomy in 1957.

Dr. Taylor worked for the Soil conservation Service, the Southwest Great Plains Research Center as Bushland, Texas, and with the USDA-ARS at Auburn University and Iowa State University before coming to Texas Tech University as a professor of soil science in 1982. He officially retired from Texas Tech in May 1991.

Dr. Taylor was an internationally recognized expert on root growth and function. He published numerous articles and gave scientific presentation throughout the world. His professional contributions helped sustain agriculture in West Texas and greatly enhanced the image of Texas Tech University in the scientific community.
