Dub, Liz, and Dr. Dennis Wollard Family Endowed Scholarship

The Dub, Liz, and Dr. Dennis Wollard Family Endowed Scholarship was established by Elizabeth and Dennis Wollard in 2015. This scholarship is awarded to students who are U.S. citizens majoring in horticulture and have an interest in ornamental, herbaceous, or woody materials. Preference of classification is junior, senior, and sophomore, respectively.

Dr. Dennis Lee Wollard was born in Wichita Falls, TX to Dub and Liz Wollard. Shortly after, the family moved to the oil fields of Andrews, TX where he attended and graduated from Andrews High School. His interest in horticulture was inherited from his mother. As a child, he cultivated fruits and vegetables while maintaining flower beds and a lily pond. His interest in plants continued on and in the early 1960's a greenhouse was built to house his growing collection of tropical plants and orchids. He enrolled in Odessa Junior College and shortly transferred to Texas Tech University to major in horticulture.

Upon graduating from Tech, he went to Louisiana State University where he was given a teaching assistantship. He earned a Master of Science degree specializing in ornamental horticulture and then continued on at Louisiana State University to receive his Ph.D. in Plant Breeding. The title of his dissertation was a “Study of the Inheritance and Combining Ability of a Male Sterile ‘Pelican' Tomato.” He then became a professor at the University of Louisiana where he taught a wide range of horticulture classes for 32 years and was very active in various plant organizations.
